The Girls' and Young Women Initiative was launched in 1996, the girls and young women's initiative (GYWI) is the creation of the lower east side community- a response to a community survey indicating that local girls and young women need a safe place of their own in which to interact, develop skills and self esteem, and grow as healthy successful young women.

GYWI is a comprehensive after school program that currently serves over 100 Latina, African-American, Caribbean-American and Asian-American girls ages 9 through 19.

The Girls' and Young Women's Initiative empowers girls and young women to excel in the classroom, become leaders in the community, and pursue their career aspirations.

Through a comprehensive youth development model, a powerful and positive alternative to the influences of peer pressure, gender bias and the media is presented to the preteen and adolescent female population in the Lower East Side community.

Within the initiative's framework, girls are encouraged and inspired to envision a future with limitless possibilities, and develop skills necessary to achieve their dreams.

GYWI participants chose from a variety of activities to create their own weekly schedule. Program components include the following:

~Rap groups-A place for girls to talk about their lives and support each other.

~ Peer Education- A group of young women who conduct workshops and outreach to their peers about adolescent health information.

~ Making the Grade- An academic assistance program where girls can get tutoring and help with homework.

~ Creation Crew - A creative arts group which explores all forms of art as a form of self-expression.

~ Giving Back-  A community service component, where young women volunteer at a local soup kitchen and in literacy project with 6 & 7 year olds.

~ Hoop Dreams- Our girls Basketball team.

~ Computer Wizards- The web design team.

~ Dream Achievers-our college/career preparation component.
