Grand Street Settlement

located on the Lower East Side, was founded in 1916.  Grand Street is dedicated to providing relevant and culturally sensitive social services to more than 5,000 community members of all ages each year, so that individuals and entire families may develop effective ways to lead independent and productive lives.

Participants in Grand Street programs include Latino-Americans, African Americans, Asian-Americans, and Jewish-Americans, and come from all corners of our community.

Grand Street programs employ a practical, holistic approach that integrates education, employment, social service, leadership training and conflict resolution, with meaningful advocacy and support.

Programs are participant-driven and fueled by diversity of culture and need. Grand Street staff and volunteers reflect the cultures of those they serve.

Grand Street Settlement's program areas include:

EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS: Serving nearly 300 families, these programs include Head Start, Day Care, and Universal Pre-k. Active parental participation through the Parent Policy Council and a Family Literacy Program are hallmarks of our family-oriented services

PROGRAMS FOR YOUNGER CHILDREN: Grand Street’s Latchkey Program and summer Day Camp offer educational enrichment, cultural programming, leadership development, and recreation programs for youngsters ages 6-12.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SERVICES: Recognizing the need of community youth for a wide variety of strength-based programming, Grand Street’s youth development programs offer an array of academic, leadership, community service, self-expression, and physical fitness activities. Our Girls and Young Women’s initiative is a nationally recognized model program which serves over 120 girls annually.

SCHOOL-BASED SERVICES: Grand Street serves over 700 students in schools an the Lower East Side and Brooklyn, helping them to succeed in school, learn about careers, and prepare for college. These programs include services for teen mothers.

HIGHROAD BEACON CENTER: The HighRoad Beacon Center offers an array of programs and services for area families. Located two blocks from the settlements main office, our Beacon Center has been recognized throughout New York City and State for the excellence of its programming and comprehensive, youth development approach.

SENIOR SERVICES: The settlement offers outstanding services to the Lower East Side senior community, including nutritional, educational, recreation and cultural activities, and advocacy services. We are expanding our services for this growing population through a H.U.D. grant to develop low -income senior housing.

OUR MISSION: is to encourage and nurture self-determination among families and individuals through support,learning,advocacy and community building.
