The World Through My Eyes

Over the last several months, the issues of police brutality and the criminal "justice" system have been at the forefront of New York's political conscience. Within the community here at Grand Street many of our youth and staff have been distressed, afraid, angry, and ultimately hopeful. "The world through my eyes" came about after a Creation Crew discussion of current events. In which many expressed feelings of powerlessness to chance the system we are part of. These works are steps towards claiming the power to affect positive chance in our community.

This collaborative mural was created by the Creation Crew of Grand Street Settlement. It is the reactions to the Diallo verdict and the criminalization of youth; thoughts on this journey to becoming a woman, an informed adult; the issues affecting our lives; taking ourselves seriously and being given the respect and opportunities we deserve.

This mural will be in the April 12, 2000 rally to save the Summer Youth Employment Program, and the Girls Congress Advocacy March on May 6, 2000.
