What is AmeriCorps?

AmeriCorps provides thousands of people with the opportunities to serve schools and community-based organizations. AmeriCorps has inspired people to improve communities, education, health and the environment. The AmeriCorps program at Grand Street Settlement, know as "Community Builders," is a part-time AmeriCorps State program. Members are required to complete 900 hours of service within one year. 2004-05 AmeriCorps Members and Staff

Grand Street Settlement and AmeriCorps
Grand Street Settlement and AmeriCorps have a successful partnership in servicing the Lower East Side community residents. AmeriCorps members serve as tutors in Grand Street Settlement's numerous after-school programs as well as assistants to the managers. Members also serve alongside teachers in Grand Street's Early Head Start and Head Start programs. Members also have the opportunity to conduct community outreach and provide services to senior citizens.

Members are also mentors to Grand Street Settlement's after-school participants. The members and participants meet regularly throughout the school year and engage in recreational and educational activities. Furthermore, AmeriCorps members leave their mark on the community years after their service due to AmeriCorps initiatives such as special events and neighborhood park renovations.

AmeriCorps on Retreat Weekly training sessions, retreats, and planning for the future are major components of the AmeriCorps program at Grand Street.

Benefits of Service
In return for service, AmeriCorps members receive a bi-weekly living allowance of $150.

Members are also eligible for an education award up to $2,300 upon successful completion of their service year.

Training is also a critical component of AmeriCorps service. Training adjusts the members to their new responsibilities. It also helps to prepare the members for their life after AmeriCorps service.
