Grand Street's early childhood programs utilize a uniform philosophical approach to how children learn and develop. Care and instruction are designed to promote the physical, social, emotional, linguistic, and cognitive development of children, enabling them to grow to their full potential.
The Family Support Center, an integral part of Grand Street's childcare services, provides multiple opportunities for parent/child interaction and assists parents in developing their own potential through a Family Literacy Program, GED classes, and enrollment in the Settlement's job training programs.
During the past few years, Grand Street has expanded its services in order to meet the increased demand for childcare brought about by changes in federal, state, and local welfare reform policies. It has increased classroom space, expanded its hours of operation, and established an Early Head Start and a Universal Pre-K Program. |

CELESTE JENNINGS Little DeAndre Jennings was six months old when his mother, Celeste, enrolled him in the home-based component of Grand Street's Early Head Start program (EHS).
A year-and-a-half later he was placed in the classroom-based program where he is able to learn and socialize with other kids his age. His older brother, Donee, a first grader, attends Grand Street's After School program.
Ms. Jennings, an AmeriCorps service provider at Grand Street, said she was thrilled when she was assigned to work with EHS.
She enjoys working with EHS parents, introducing them to educational activities they can teach their children. "When DeAndre was a baby, the EHS Home Visitor made it possible for me to keep my doctor's appointments," recalled Ms. Jennings, who is a diabetic.
"Program staff are always there for parents who need to resolve different kinds of family problems."
Ms. Jennings is looking forward to becoming a teacher soon. She presently holds an AA degree in Human Services and Early Childhood Develop-ment and has accumulated almost 100 hours of college credits toward a BS in Elementary Education. « Back to previous page Top of page
