DERRICK DEL VALLE
Grand Street's Project COOL after-school program has provided Derrick Del Valle the opportunity to develop an array of new skills and interests. Derrick is a member of the program's Boy Scouts and has participated in the JUMP Program, a volunteer initiative organized by two of Grand Street's Board members. He says the program has allowed him to visit sites around the city that he normally wouldn't visit on his own or with his family. He also likes team sports such as basketball, soccer and football. "I like basketball the best," he says, explaining how every year, the after-school youngsters form several co-ed teams, wear uniforms, and play for trophies during intramural tournaments.

Derrick proudly states that he does well in school and doesn't really need the academic assistance or tutoring services offered by the after-school program. "But I get to do my homework there and have a snack everyday," he says. He thinks the program "really helps kids" and he has recommended it to other youngsters. His six-year old brother is also enrolled in after-school programming.
