SENIOR PROGRAMS

Grand Street Settlement has a long and impressive track record of providing assistance to low-income elderly of all ethnic and racial backgrounds, assisting and empowering them to overcome their financial, physical, and social difficulties and lead comfortable, healthy, stimulating, and productive lives.

A Second Home for Seniors

Through our senior programs, Grand Street assists more than 1,000 seniors annually. Our oldest program, the Grand Coalition, created in the early 1970's, provides over 500 seniors with nutritious meals that meet their multi-ethnic dietary preferences; helps them obtain such essential services as Medicare, HEAP, SSI and Food Stamps, health and mental health care, and housing; and engages them in recreational, cultural, sports, and exercise activities that keep them active and in good physical form.

Our Older Adults Program, which hearkens back to an earlier era at Grand Street, serves a group of about 30 Jewish seniors, many now in their 80s and 90s, who have a long history of involvement with Grand Street. They meet three evenings a week to enjoy music, folk dancing, bingo, or simply to chat with old friends over tea and coffee.

Our Asian-American Elders Project (AAEP), in operation since 2000, provides a unique opportunity for our community's Asian seniors to come together for socialization and recreation. Culturally appropriate activities include Chinese tea ceremonies, brush painting, and calligraphy. English and Spanish classes are also available, and it is not unusual to see Latino/a seniors taking a Tai Chi class or Asian seniors learning how to salsa dance.

Housed at 72 Columbia Street, the Baruch Elders Services Team (BEST) Program, Grand Street's newest program for the aging, employs senior volunteers to conduct outreach to their homebound, frail, and isolated peers in the Bernard Baruch Houses' NORC-like (Naturally-Occurring Retirement Community) environment. The BEST program has capacity for 900 seniors and hosted its grand opening on October 23, 2003.
