TEEN PROGRAMS Grand Street Settlement offers a comprehensive array of programs and services that help young people succeed in school, cope with the daily challenges of growing up in an economically impoverished community, and obtain the skills, training, and support they need to realize their hopes and dreams. Grand Street counters such daunting problems as school failure, teen pregnancy, substance abuse, and youth violence with programs that offer young people viable alternatives, strong support systems, and hope for a better future. Our Teen Programs are offered at our Community Center at 80 Pitt Street, our Beacon Center, and several area high schools. |

Careers in Training (CIT) introduces junior high school students to a variety of careers through guest speakers, job shadowing, and exposure to professional settings. Services include academic assistance, tutoring, guidance and counseling, computer instruction, college trips, hands-on work experience, an entrepreneur program, and stipends. The College Discovery Center orients youth and their families to post-secondary education opportunities; assists students in identifying institutions appropriate to their educational needs, interests, and goals; and helps them in securing financial support. The Program includes early awareness workshops for younger students, guidance counseling, and academic assistance. The Girls' and Young Women's Initiative and the Boys' and Young Men's Initiative are two progressive gender-specific programs that help young people to dismantle stereotypes which might impede their full development. Participants are engaged in mandatory academic assistance, “rap” or discussion groups, and creative resiliency activities like writing, drama, dance, and cooking. The Computer Wizards of Grand Street's Girls and Young Women's Initiative have developed their own web site!

The Gay and Lesbian Youth Initiative provides youth with a safe space in which to explore issues such as homophobia, loss and bereavement, coming-out, self-discovery, and relationships; trains them to be peer educators; and guides them in developing strategies for living positively in an often negative environment. The Computer Clubhouse (sponsored by a grant from Intel), is a state-of-the-art facility where young participants can create graphics and music, make and program Lego robots, access information from the internet for schoolwork and personal development, and learn valuable technology skills. The Community Technology Center (CTC) is our new computer lab that includes up-to-date computers, software, printers, and other technological equipment for the community’s use. Primary focuses of the project include encouraging nontraditional project-based learning among our younger participants and increasing community residents’ access to technology. It serves as a complement to our Intel Computer Clubhouse by offering more structured, academic programs, while the Clubhouse continues to be a hub for creative exploration. The Carrera-Dempsey Pregnancy Prevention Program is a holistic initiative that offers health education, case management services, job readiness training, sports, creative arts, tutoring, and other education related and youth development services. The Bushwick Teen Mothers Project helps pregnant girls and teen mothers to stay in school, make responsible and informed decisions, and establish long-range goals. It helps them access health and social services for themselves and their children, and provides them with parenting and child development training. The Adolescent Sexual Health Initiative (ASHI) trains Peer Educators to provide peer-based instruction and counseling to thousands of area teens. The project also disseminates culturally sensitive prevention materials among all of Grand Street's programs, at local schools, and throughout the community. |
