SONNY KIM
Fourteen-year-old Sonny Kim says the Girls and Young Women's Initiative at Grand Street (GYWI) has motivated her to try out new and fun experiences like Mad Science, snow boarding, and gymnastics. "The program staff know how to make learning fun," she says. Sonny feels especially good about learning how to play basketball, something she says her father never expected her to do because she is small. "I feel good about the basketball skills I've learned and I'm happy to prove to him that I can play," she says.

Sonny has also enjoyed spending time with her mentor who has introduced her to a variety of interesting sites around New York City including museums, a botanical garden, a magazine office, and restaurants that serve food she had never tried before. She is also excited about attending York Prep School and is grateful to the Coordinator of GYWI who helped her to gain admission. "I was very bored in public school," she says, "I wasn't challenged to learn. York is a better school and I'm much happier." Sonny first heard about GYWI from her friends and decided to find out for herself just what they were raving about. She says she has not been disappointed.
