POSITION:                          Disability Coordinator

DEPARTMENT:  Early Childhood

REPORTS TO:                    Director of Day Care/Head Start Collaborations

SALARY RANGE:              $50-55,000 (Commensurate with Experience)

JOB SUMMARY:   The Disability Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating all disability services for children from birth to 5 in our Early Head Start, Head Start, and Day Care collaboration programs on the Lower East Side and in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

·         M.S. in Preschool Special Education and 2-5 years experience working with children with special needs birth to five and their families.

·         Knowledge of Early Intervention (EI) and the New York City Department of Education Committee for Preschool Special Education Procedures (CPSE)

·         LCSW

 

  MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

 

 Organize the screening, referral, assessment and evaluation processes for children from birth to five in community based Early Childhood Programs to ensure that all participant families have access to these services

                                        

  • Coordinate the goal enhancement process for families with children identified as having developmental delays and the individual education goals for each child. 
  • Collaborate with disabilities service providers to ensure that all services are made available in a timely family-centered arrangement.
  • Serve as liaison with the Manhattan offices of Early Intervention and Region 9 Committee for Preschool Special Education.
  • Track the delivery of disability services for all eligible children to ensure efficiency, quality and timeliness.
  • Serve as part of each management team to ensure the inclusion of disabilities services in all aspects of program planning and execution in compliance with the Head Start Performance Standards
  • Write the disability plans in compliance with Head Performance Standards
  • Serve as community liaison to service providers and governmental oversight agencies to facilitate the delivery of services.
  • Manage, recruit, and obtain interagency agreements from all service providers, and conduct the biannual Disability Services Advisory Committee. Monitor all pertinent recordkeeping.
  • Advocate for families and children receiving disability services.
  • Provide training for staff regarding best practices for integrating families with children with special needs into the programs.
  • Oversee the presentation of information to parents regarding their children’s individual needs and the systems providing disability services.
  • Assist Education Directors in arranging classrooms and providing materials that ensure the optimal experiences for children with special needs.
  • Collaborate with the classroom team to develop systems of support to ensure meaningful inclusion of children with disability.
