JOB SUMMARY

The Government Grants Writer & Grants Manager works with the Director of Development & Public Relations, the Associate Director for Institutional Advancement and the development team to secure government funding for agency programming and general operating support.  This shall include writing proposals, managing relationships with program and projects staff, and developing and nurturing profitable relationships with government as well as institutional donors, including corporations, and foundations.  S/he reports to the Associate Director for Institutional Advancement.  S/he will support a sustained effort of identifying, soliciting, and retaining institutional donors with a strong focus on government grantsThe Government Grants Writer & Grants Manager ] will develop, write, and prepare proposals (and contracts) and assist program staff to design programs to meet the requirements of specific requests for proposals or application (RFPs/RFAs).  Under the supervision of the AD for Institutional Advancement, and in collaboration with a Chief Program Officer, a Quality Assurance & Contract Compliance Coordinator and a Controller, s/he will work with program staff to ensure compliance and timely submission of contract requirements and reports, and other quality control issues relating to government contracts and foundation awards.   Work priorities will be set as determined by the AD for Institutional Advancement.

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

·     A Bachelor of Arts and preferably a Masters degree in creative and/or technical writing, publishing, journalism, and/or mass communications, or equivalent work experience.

·     Excellent writing skills.

·     Significant experience in writing government proposals with a proven track record of successful outcomes.

·     Experience preparing technical project proposals or reports for government funding agencies.

·     Ability to respond quickly to new fundraising opportunities and to changing priorities.

·     Familiarity with the New York philanthropic community—government, foundation and corporate

·     Must be self-motivated, detail and deadline oriented, and possess the ability to multi-task on various priorities and deadlines; flexibility with tasks assignments and ability to “flow” with non profit culture essential.

·     Must have the ability to work comfortably with a variety of program staff at various levels of the organization.

·     Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and fundraising databases, preferably Donor Perfect.

·     Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills; excellent follow-through with projects and strong attention to detail.

·     Experience in working collaboratively—must have a flexible, enthusiastic, and cooperative nature with the ability to handle situations and interact with others with tact and diplomacy.

·     Entrepreneurialmust be willing and able to take initiative and handle a multitude of tasks under the pressure of deadlines.

·     Strong project management skills with a demonstrated ability to meet schedules and deadlines.

·     Sense of humor a must.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

·     Prepare RFP proposals (and reports) for government grants, including city, state and federal funding opportunities. The majority of the work load for this position will be government grants related.

·     Prepare proposals and reports for foundations, corporations, and some family donors and appropriate materials required for corporate support.

·     Update monthly calendar of proposal deadlines and contract reporting requirements.

·     Prepare proposals and reports for government agencies and offices of government officials

·     Assist in the management of compliance and reporting requirements of existing agency contracts.

·     With the AD for Institutional Advancement, be in regular communication with and assist program staff in designing programs or projects to match RFP/RFA requirements.

·     Communicate with the Fiscal Department and various programs to gather necessary and accurate information for government (and foundation) applications and reports.


·     Assist with development department writing projects as needed, i.e., special acknowledgements, donor appeals, agency and program fact sheets, etc.

·     Work with the Coordinator of Communications & Public Relations on projects as needed, i.e., press releases, etc.

 

Administrative Duties

·     Work with the Director of Development & Public Relations and the Associate Director for Institutional Advancement to develop the agency budget for government, foundations and corporate support/sponsorshipsand monitor revenues and budgeted expenditures on a quarterly basis.

·     Ensure proper donor recognition and provide accurate donor lists for publications, etc.

·     Prepare statistical reports on government (and foundation) donor status, including solicitations and renewals on a quarterly basis.

·     Track all government (and foundation) funding  and contract awards and oversee acknowledgment processes.

·     Prepare reports as requested by the Director of Development & Public Relations and the AD for Institutional Advancement.

·     Assists with the coordination of special events as required.

·     Perform other duties as assigned.
